Plan Now and Make Quality Reporting Season Less Stressful

CMS Web Interface reporting is complex. You might consider outsourcing your quality reporting and abstraction mandates.

Underestimating the scope of a quality reporting project isn’t uncommon. If your team will use CMS Web Interface to report your 2017 data to comply with the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS), you need to be aware of how your staff will be affected. And, you need to plan now to ensure your team will not be overwhelmed by the workload.

Groups with 25 or more MIPS-eligible clinicians, such as those that previously reported through GPRO, and all ACO Track 1 providers are required to use CMS Web Interface. In order to determine eligibility and which mechanism is right for you, please check the CMS Fact Sheet.

Charts, measures and time. Lots of time.
During CMS Web Interface reporting, teams are required to complete and submit a minimum of 248 charts for each of the 15 quality measures. Just the abstraction alone for all of those charts is extremely time consuming. When you add time for researching and analyzing data, the process becomes even more time intensive.

You are not required to report on every one of your Medicare beneficiaries. Instead, CMS will select a sample from your charts and send you the data in early January. At that point, you can begin working on reporting. As you work through the charts CMS assigns there will be some charts that you have to skip for various reasons. Since you won’t know exactly how many charts you will need to skip and how many you will need to touch in order to reach the magic number (248 per measure), it will be necessary to be flexible and able to commit as many hours to reporting as necessary.

Adding reporting work to your staff and expecting continued excellence in other day-to-day tasks might not be realistic. That’s why it is important to have a plan for managing the additional data abstraction and reporting work. Otherwise, reporting demands can easily overwhelm your staff and disrupt your organization’s workflow.

Consider a partner.
If reporting strained your team last year, there is no reason to struggle through it again this year. A lot of providers simply do not have the personnel to tackle reporting on their own.
